In the 9th century, the monks of Vézelay claimed to have obtained Mary Magdalene's relics. No evidence supported this claim, but the faith of pilgrims requires no proof. Vézelay quickly became one of the starting points of the Way of St. James and a gathering place for the crusades.
On March 31, 1146, Bernard of Clairvaux climbed the hill before an immense crowd and preached the Second Crusade. King Louis VII took the cross. Thousands of men followed him. Vézelay entered History as the place where Europe set forth toward Jerusalem.
