In 1492, as Granada fell to Christian forces, a network of Andalusian artisans and scholars fled south across the Strait of Gibraltar
You are a 16th-century Wattasid emissary, sent by Sultan Moulay Abd al-Salam Ben Machour to Tetouan.
Your mission is to recover a
Dive into the labyrinth of Tetouan's medina, where every alley whispers the epic of exiled Andalusians and Sephardic secrets.
Your journey begins in front of Bab al-Okla, the monumental 16th-century gate. Built under the Wattasid dynasty, this 'Gate of the Andalusians' was the main entrance for Moorish refugees expelled from Spain after 1609. Its 8-meter height and pointed arch, typical of Hispano-Moorish architecture, bear witness to this exodus. Restored in 1997 as part of the preservation of the UNESCO site, it marks the threshold of Tetouan's medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997, inviting you to follow in the footsteps of Ahmed al-Rifi, the Andalusian urban planner who shaped this district.
Enter Souk el Hout, the wood market active since the 16th century. This central hub of Andalusian craftsmanship specializes in carved wood, particularly for the zellij and carved ceilings that adorn Tetouan's homes. Covering approximately 1,500 m², its 50 traditional stalls are the legacy of Andalusian artisans who settled here after the Reconquista of 1492. The manuscript could be hidden among the geometric patterns, a clue carved into the wood by a master cabinetmaker.
Place Hassan II, developed in the 20th century on an old souk, offers a moment of respite. Named in honor of King Hassan II (reigned 1961-1999), this 100 m x 50 m square is surrounded by typical white buildings and connects the medina to the modern Ensanche. It was the site of historical gatherings, notably during the restoration of Moroccan independence in 1956. A message might have been hidden here, taking advantage of the crowds by a spy, a link between Tetouan's Wattasid past and its present.
Your investigation then leads you to Fondouk Chejra, an 18th-century caravanserai dedicated to the tile trade. Built by Andalusian merchants, its central patio of 20 m x 15 m, surrounded by 24 rooms, was a key stop for caravans connecting Tetouan to Fez and Tangier. Restored in 2005 for UNESCO preservation, it might house a coded message in its zellige patterns, or a secret hiding place revealed by merchants of old. Nearby, the Old Mellah, a historic Jewish quarter established in the 16th century, testifies to Judeo-Andalusian coexistence, with its 1700 synagogue, mikvahs, and Talmudic schools.
Approaching the Royal Palace of Tetouan, a residence built in 1942 on the ruins of a 16th-century Wattasid palace, you understand the importance of this document. Its 4-hectare domain, with Moorish gardens, has been a residence for Alaouite sultans since 1859. The Great Mosque of Tetouan, founded in 1494 by refugees from Granada and rebuilt in 1806, with its 40-meter minaret, dominates the landscape. This journey will have led you to explore a part of the Tetouan Medina, one of the most important legacies of the 100,000 Moriscos expelled from Spain between 1609 and 1614, and you will have discovered why Tetouan is nicknamed the 'White Dove', a jewel of Moroccan world heritage.
