June 1586
You are a Royal Emissary, dispatched by Queen Elizabeth's court to the smoldering ruins of San Agustín in June 1586.
Sir Francis Drake's English
1586 — The year Drake razed America's first city
« They burnt the towne, and razed the fort, and carried away all the ordinance »— Richard Hakluyt, Principal Navigations, 1589
In 1585, the Anglo-Spanish War officially breaks out. Elizabeth I dispatches Francis Drake with 25 ships and 2300 men to bleed Spain in her colonies. After plundering Santo Domingo and Cartagena de Indias, Drake sets course for Florida. On May 27, 1586, his fleet anchors off St Augustine. Governor Pedro Menéndez Marqués orders evacuation: with only 150 men, resistance is impossible.
Drake lands unopposed on June 7. His men systematically burn the town, raze the wooden fort, carry away the cannons, and destroy the crops. Only stone foundations resist the flames. The attack lasts three days, but its consequences mark history: St Augustine will rise from its ashes, stronger, and become the symbol of Spanish resistance against English corsairs. Drake continues to Virginia where he saves the Roanoke colony before returning triumphantly to England.
