On August 28, 1565, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés sights the Florida coast. This 46-year-old Asturian admiral has received a perilous mission from Philip II: establish a permanent colony to counter French expansion in North America and evangelize the natives. On September 8, feast of the Nativity of the Virgin, he lands and officially founds St Augustine, 42 years before Jamestown and 55 years before Plymouth.
The colony's survival borders on miraculous. Menéndez must deal with Timucua tribes, confront French corsairs, and maintain a garrison of 1500 men with insufficient supplies. He symbolically marries the sister of Chief Carlos to seal an alliance, establishes a chain of forts along the Atlantic coast, and transforms St Augustine into Spain's first naval base on the continent. At his death in 1574, he leaves behind the oldest European city in the United States.
