Sweet Auburn — the birthplace of a dream turned revolution
« The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy. »— Martin Luther King Jr., Strength to Love (1963)
Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929, at 501 Auburn Avenue, into a family of Baptist pastors. His grandfather Adam Daniel Williams and his father Martin Luther King Sr. successively led Ebenezer Baptist Church, a pillar of Atlanta's Black community. Young Martin grew up in Sweet Auburn, nicknamed the 'Black Wall Street' for its exceptional economic prosperity. He attended David T. Howard Colored Elementary School then Booker T. Washington High School, where he excelled academically.
Graduating from Morehouse College at 19, King pursued theological studies at Crozer Seminary in Pennsylvania, then earned a doctorate in philosophy from Boston University in 1955. There he met Coretta Scott, whom he married in 1953. Appointed pastor in Montgomery, Alabama in 1954, he led the 381-day bus boycott starting in 1955 that propelled the civil rights movement. His approach to nonviolent resistance, inspired by Gandhi, revolutionized the struggle for racial equality in America.
