Alexandria and the Roots of the Civil War
Founded in 1749, Alexandria quickly became a prosperous commercial port on the Potomac River. Its colonial and federal architecture bears witness to this wealth and its important role in American history, particularly with figures like George Washington. However, its prosperity was partly based on slavery, a reality that would tear apart the country and the city itself. Located on the border between North and South, Alexandria was a place of intense tension as the Civil War approached.
Robert E. Lee, born in 1807, spent a significant part of his childhood and youth in Alexandria, particularly in his mother's home. His attachment to Virginia was profound. In 1861, when his home state seceded from the Union, Lee, then a colonel in the United States Army, faced a heartbreaking choice.
