The Silent Heart of Malta
The history of Mdina, ancient Roman Melite, dates back over 4,000 years. It became the capital of Malta under the Phoenicians, then an important center under the Arabs, and was renamed Notabile by the Normans in the 12th century. Here, the Università, the local administrative council, governed by Maltese noble families, held its seat. These aristocratic lineages, such as the Inguanez, Testaferrata, and de Piro, built magnificent palaces and wielded considerable power, shaping the island's political and social identity long before the arrival of the Knights of St. John.
In 1530, the arrival of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, to whom Charles V entrusted Malta, marked a turning point. Mdina lost its capital status to Birgu (Vittoriosa), and later Valletta. However, it remained the stronghold of Maltese nobility and the seat of the bishopric, retaining strong ecclesiastical and social influence. The great earthquake of 1693 devastated parts of the city, including its cathedral, but the subsequent Baroque reconstruction gave it the elegant and serene appearance it is known for today, reinforcing its nickname 'Silent City'.
