Mdina's history is a living palimpsest. After the Arab conquest in 870 AD, the ancient Roman Melite was transformed into a fortified Medina, the nerve center of Malta. For over two centuries, the island flourished under Islamic influence, as evidenced by agriculture, hydraulic systems, and Maltese toponymy, rich in Arabic-derived words. Mdina, with its imposing ramparts, then housed mosques, markets, and dwellings, whose urban structure still persists today.
The Norman reconquest by Roger I of Sicily in 1091 marked a turning point. While Arab domination did not cease instantly, a slow and progressive Christianization began. Mosques were converted into churches or destroyed, minarets replaced by bell towers, and Christian culture reaffirmed. Mdina, renamed the 'Noble City' (Civitas Notabilis) by its new masters, strove to erase visible traces of its Muslim past, while subtly absorbing its heritage into a new Maltese identity.
