The Whitman Mission: Between Hope and Tragedy
Established in 1836 by missionary physician Marcus Whitman and his wife Narcissa Prentiss Whitman, the Presbyterian Waiilatpu Mission, near present-day Walla Walla, served as a center for evangelizing the Cayuse Nation and a crucial stop on the Oregon Trail. The Whitmans, among the first American settlers to cross the Rocky Mountains, offered education and medical care to Indigenous people and emigrants, transforming the mission into a vital crossroads on the American frontier.
However, the following decade saw a deterioration of relations. The increasing influx of settlers encroached on Cayuse lands, and cultural differences led to profound misunderstandings.
