Eleusis — Uncover the Forbidden Mysteries

Your quest begins at the Ploutonion Cave in Eleusis, a site developed in the 5th century BC and considered the symbolic entrance to the Underworld. With an interior height of approximately 10m, this cave was used to simulate the descent to Hades' realm, a central element of the myth of Persephone's abduction. It is here that legends speak of the appearance of a bull or a serpent during mystical visions. In 1900, archaeologist Georges Soteriades was one of the first to explore and describe this national Greek archaeological site, paving the way for a better understanding of ritual practices.

Continue to the Telesterion, the main hall for initiations, rebuilt by Corebos around 330 BC. Measuring 25.20m x 25.80m, this building could accommodate up to 3,000 standing people, initiated into the Eleusinian Mysteries. Its 42 pillars created a theatrical effect of light and shadows, essential for nocturnal rituals. It was in this place that the mystics drank the kykeon, a ritual beverage made from barley and mint, around 500 BC. The historian Pausanias, in the 2nd century AD, already described it as the largest building in ancient Greece dedicated to mysteries.

Your journey then takes you to the Kallichoron Well, or Fountain of Beautiful Dances, a circular well from the 6th century BC. Participants danced and sang praises to Demeter, goddess of agriculture, here. With a diameter of 4.35m and a depth of 4.50m, its rock-cut steps attest to its ritual use. This well is associated with the first stage of the minor mysteries, preceding the great Sanctuary of Eleusis, listed on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list in 2015 as part of the Mycenaean sites of Eleusis. Pausanias also mentions it in his Description of Greece.

Pass through the Great Propylaea of Eleusis, a monumental entrance portico built around 50 AD under Emperor Claudius. Its 16m width and pediment decorated with reliefs depicting Demeter and Kore marked the obligatory passage point for pilgrims descending the Sacred Way from Athens. This 35km paved road, in use since the 7th century BC, was the annual ritual path for mystics. The archaeological site of Eleusis (Iera Odos 5) incorporates a section of this Sacred Way, and the Great Propylaea was partially restored in the 19th century by the Greek Archaeological School. Emperor Hadrian himself, initiated into the mysteries, was a benefactor of the sanctuary.
