Vitré — the sentinel of the Marches of Brittany
The Marches of Brittany designated the border zone between the Duchy of Brittany and the Kingdom of France from the 10th to the 16th century. Vitré, Fougères, and Châteaubriant formed the triple lock of this border. The Château de Vitré, with its unique triangular plan, was built in the 11th century by Baron Robert I of Vitré.
The town experienced its golden age in the 15th and 16th centuries through international trade in hemp cloth — Vitré's "canvas" was exported as far as South America. Rue de la Baudrairie, with its half-timbered houses and medieval shops, still testifies to this prosperity.
During the French Revolution, the Chouans — Breton royalist insurgents — used Vitré and Fougères as rear bases. Balzac, fascinated by this civil war, set his novel "Les Chouans" here in 1829. Today, Vitré's old town is so well preserved it feels like walking through a medieval film set.
