The story that haunts this land

Your journey begins at Canongate Kirkyard, a historic cemetery opened in 1688, where Adam Smith, buried in 1790 under a simple tomb, rests. This site, managed by the City of Edinburgh Council, houses over 1,000 18th-century graves, silent witnesses to the Scottish Enlightenment. Smith's tomb, restored in 2007 with the inscription 'Here lies Adam Smith' by the Royal Bank of Scotland, marks the starting point of an immersion into the mind of the man who theorized the 'invisible hand' of the market, and whose influence has spanned centuries, making Edinburgh a UNESCO Creative City of Literature in 2004.

A short walk away, Panmure House awaits you, Adam Smith's residence from 1778 to 1790. Rebuilt in 1780 after a fire, this Georgian house of approximately 500 m² was restored in 2023 for £10 million by the Panmure Development Trust and opened to the public in June 2023. It houses Smith's original library, with 1,000 volumes on economics and philosophy. Here you perceive the intellectual environment that nourished his reflections, before heading to the Scottish Parliament, completed in 2004 by Enric Miralles, a 32,000 m² building that has housed the 129 seats of the Parliament since its inauguration by Queen Elizabeth II on October 9, 2004, symbolizing Scotland's democratic renewal.

Your quest then leads you to the statue of David Hume, erected in 1995 by Sandy Stoddart at the intersection of the Royal Mile and Lawnmarket. This 4-meter bronze statue pays tribute to the empiricist philosopher, a key figure of the Scottish Enlightenment and author of 'A Treatise of Human Nature' (1739-1740). Cast with 300 kg of bronze thanks to public donations, it reminds you of the importance of critical thinking in Edinburgh. Not far, Parliament Square, a historic 17th-century square, witnessed witch trials in 1591 and public executions until 1811. Bordered by St Giles' Cathedral, built in 1110 and rebuilt in 1385, it was the heart of the medieval Scottish Parliament, paved for pedestrians in 1976.

The route continues to the Old College of the University of Edinburgh, whose 100-meter-long neoclassical facade was built between 1789 and 1827 by Robert Adam. Founded in 1583, this institution saw Joseph Black, the first professor of chemistry, discover CO2 in 1755, one of the Great Scottish Inventions. Its library, rich with 3 million volumes, is linked to 20 Nobel laureates. Here you understand the intellectual effervescence of the city, before reaching the National Library of Scotland, founded in 1689 as King James VII's library. With 30 million items, including 13 million books, it has been a Scottish legal deposit since 1710, offering free access to its collections in its George IV Bridge building opened in 1843.

Finally, your exploration concludes at the Royal Society of Edinburgh, founded in 1783 by Royal Charter of George III. Its first meeting took place on April 28, 1783, and it has been located at 22-26 George Street since 1822. With over 1,700 fellows, including 80 Nobel laureates, it promoted the Enlightenment with figures like Adam Smith and the geologist James Hutton. As an archivist, you have not only traced the itinerary of Edinburgh's great minds but have also deciphered the legacy of an era when Scotland, and particularly Edinburgh and Lothians, was a beacon of modern thought, leaving behind a heritage inscribed in Historic Environment Scotland and the city's motto, 'Nisi Dominus Frustra'.
