In the early 19th century, Fernandina Beach Historic District became a powder keg of intrigue as eight flags flew over Amelia Island—the only place in America to witness such turmoil
You are a Spanish Crown agent, dispatched to Fernandina Beach in 1817, tasked with unraveling the island's chaotic past.
In the early 19th century, this
The Republic of Florida — fourteen days of independence in 1817
« I have this day hoisted the Patriot Flag of the Floridas, and taken possession of Amelia Island and all its dependencies in the name of the Republic of the Floridas, of which I am the duly commissioned General-in-Chief. »— Gregor MacGregor, Proclamation du 29 juin 1817
Amelia Island occupies an exceptional strategic position at the mouth of the St. Marys River, natural border between Georgia and Spanish Florida. Since 1562, eight flags have flown over this land: French with Jean Ribault, Spanish under Philip II, British after the Treaty of Paris (1763), Spanish again in 1784, then this rapid succession between 1817 and 1821 — MacGregor's Republic of Florida, Luis Aury's colors, the United States flag, and finally the Confederate flag during the Civil War before the definitive return of the Stars and Stripes.
This political instability makes Amelia Island a refuge for smugglers, filibusters and revolutionaries. Gregor MacGregor, former British officer turned mercenary in Bolívar's service, establishes his base there to support South American independence movements. Luis Aury, corsair of Gran Colombia, transforms the island into a free port to dispose of war prizes. Between these two adventurers, Fernandina becomes the last bastion of pirate republics in North America, until the intervention of the American navy in December 1817.
