Nashville 1960: The Forgotten Front of Nonviolence

« If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything. »
John Lewis, leader des sit-ins de Nashville

The Nashville Shockwave

In the 1950s, Nashville, like many cities in the American South, was deeply divided by Jim Crow laws, enforcing racial segregation in schools, transportation, and public places, including lunch counters. This reality of blatant inequality fueled growing frustration within the African American community. It was against this backdrop that Reverend James Lawson, a fervent advocate of nonviolence inspired by Gandhi, began organizing workshops at Fisk University and local churches as early as 1959.

These workshops trained a generation of students, including Diane Nash, John Lewis, and James Bevel, in the principles of nonviolent civil disobedience. On February 13, 1960, after months of rigorous preparation, students launched their first sit-ins at downtown department store lunch counters like Woolworth's and Kress. Despite mass arrests, assaults, and the bombing of attorney Z. Alexander Looby's home, their unwavering determination culminated on May 10, 1960, when Nashville became the first major Southern city to desegregate its lunch counters, marking a crucial victory for the Civil Rights Movement.
