Perched 367 feet (110 meters) above the desert floor, Acoma Pueblo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited human settlements in North America, with evidence of occupation dating back over 1000 years. Dubbed 'Sky City,' this Keresan-speaking community developed a resilient culture and a complex social system, adapted to its unique environment. Its defensive position on the mesa allowed the Acoma to repel numerous threats, including forced integration attempts by early Spanish explorers.
The arrival of the Spanish, notably Juan de Oñate in 1598, marked a turning point. Despite resistance and a bloody conflict in 1599, the Acoma maintained their identity and traditions.
