In November 1861, the Union Army seized Port Royal Sound and the Sea Islands. White planters fled hastily, abandoning 10,000 Gullah slaves on the islands. This population, heir to West African cultures — Mende, Vai, Temne, Wolof — had developed a unique creole language mixing English and African substrates, preserving millennia-old traditions in an environment of oppression.
The federal government then launched the Port Royal Experiment: educate these former slaves, distribute land to them, prove that emancipation could succeed.
