Unlike conquistadors who imposed Christianity through violence, Fray Junípero Serra experimented in Tepic with a revolutionary approach: evangelization through education and language. He learned Cora, Huichol and Nahuatl, translated Christian prayers and taught Latin writing to indigenous chiefs. This peaceful method, tested in Tepic missions between 1750 and 1767, earned him a reputation as a living saint.
When Charles III expelled the Jesuits in 1767, Serra was chosen to lead the California missions precisely because of his success in Tepic. He applied the same gentle methods to found the 21 Californian missions, from San Diego to San Francisco. Canonized in 2015, Junípero Serra remains controversial, but his time in Tepic testifies to a sincere attempt to reconcile evangelization with respect for indigenous cultures.
