Forced collectivization in Hungary
Between 1948 and 1956, Mátyás Rákosi's communist regime imposed collectivization of Hungarian agriculture following the Soviet model. Private lands were confiscated to create state cooperatives (TSZ). This policy provoked massive resistance in the countryside, particularly in traditional regions like the Palóc country where Hollókő has perpetuated an authentic peasant way of life since the 13th century.
Hollókő, inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in 1987, represents one of the last testimonies of this rural resistance. The village preserved its traditional Palóc architecture and ancestral social structures despite regime pressures. Peasant families developed passive resistance strategies: hiding property titles, secretly maintaining agricultural traditions, village solidarity against political commissioners.
