The Garifuna, also known as Garinagu, are descendants of Arawak, Carib, and African peoples, whose history began on the island of St. Vincent. After centuries of resistance against European colonization attempts, their fate took a tragic turn in the late 18th century. Following their defeat in the Second Carib War in 1796, the British massively deported the Garifuna to the island of Roatán in Honduras in 1797, a forced exile that marked the beginning of their long odyssey across Central America.
