« The water power of Columbus is unsurpassed by any point on the Atlantic slope, and with proper management will make this the Manchester of the South. »
Columbus Enquirer, 1828

The industrial empire of the falls

In 1828, a group of Georgian speculators founded Columbus on ancestral Creek Indian lands, recently expropriated. Their goal: exploit the exceptional hydraulic power of Chattahoochee Falls. The Chattahoochee Falls Company, led by figures like William H. Young and John Fontaine, invested heavily in dam and canal construction. Within twenty years, Columbus became the South's second textile center, after Augusta.

The textile industry radically transformed the city. Eagle & Phenix Mills, founded in 1868, employed up to 3,000 workers and produced 75,000 yards of fabric daily. City Mills, Muscogee Mills and other factories established along the river. This prosperity attracted Northern entrepreneurs and European immigrants, but relied on exploiting poorly paid local labor and racial segregation. In 1865, Columbus suffered the last destructions of the Civil War, but its magnates quickly rebuilt their industrial empire.
