In the sweltering summer of 1864, Andersonville Prison—known as the Barracks of Death—became a hellish stockade where 45,000 Union soldiers endured starvation, disease, and despair
You are a Union intelligence operative, dispatched to Andersonville, Georgia, in the sweltering summer of 1864.
You arrive at Andersonville Prison, known as the Barracks of
Camp Sumter — the Confederate hell where 100 men died daily
« I can die but once. It is for the Union I die. »— Sergeant Boston Corbett, prisonnier à Andersonville
In February 1864, facing a massive influx of Union prisoners, the Confederacy established Camp Sumter near the village of Andersonville, Georgia. Designed for 10,000 inmates, the camp would hold up to 33,000 by summer 1864. On these 25 acres surrounded by a pine stockade, no barracks were built: prisoners dug holes in Georgia's red clay or sheltered under makeshift tarps.
Swiss-born Captain Henry Wirz, camp commandant, enforced rules of unprecedented brutality. The 'dead line,' an inner barrier marking a forbidden zone, became the symbol of this hell: anyone crossing it was shot without warning. Between February 1864 and April 1865, 13,000 prisoners died of malnutrition, dysentery, scurvy, and gangrene. Wirz would be tried, condemned to death, and executed in November 1865 — the only Confederate hanged for war crimes.
