Glencolmcille — St. Columba's Turas Enigmas

Glencolumbkille Folk Village welcomes you to Father James McDyer's visionary initiative, who created this living museum in the 1960s to save traditional Gaeltacht crafts. This community development priest (1910-1987) transformed this isolated valley into the official starting point of Turas Cholmcille. The reconstructed thatched houses shelter ancestral trades: weaving, pottery, blacksmithing. You discover the vernacular architecture that surrounded Saint Columba during his 6th-century preaching.

Saint Columba's Well marks the first sacred station where Colm Cille drew holy water for his baptisms. This natural well, surrounded by votive stones deposited by fifteen centuries of pilgrims, retains its reputation for miraculous healing. The saint's disciples came here seeking divine inspiration before copying religious manuscripts. Here began the theological conflict that pushed Saint Columba toward Scottish exile: the right to copy sacred texts without ecclesiastical authorization.

Malin More dolmen testifies to this valley's spiritual continuity, occupied 3,000 years before Saint Columba's arrival. This Neolithic megalithic tomb served as a landmark for early Irish Christians, who integrated pagan sites into their sacred geography. Saint Columba himself respected this Celtic tradition by establishing prayer stations near ancestral monuments. The dolmen overlooks the coastal route to Slieve League cliffs, an Atlantic panorama contemplated by scribe monks.

The Stone of Gathering, ninth Turas station, reveals its carved pillar pierced with a hole at the summit. According to local tradition, engaged couples intertwined their fingers here in love professions before the community, a ritual persisting since the Middle Ages. This stone also marked the gathering place for Donegal clans during Saint Columba's religious festivals. Every June 9th, his feast day, thousands of Irish and Scottish pilgrims still converge toward this station.

Your route leads to ruins of the church founded by Saint Columba around 560, where foundations of Donegal's first monastic community remain.
