Your quest begins at Kilkenny Castle, majestically erected on Parade, Kilkenny, R95 YX96, overlooking the Nore Valley. This Norman edifice, initially built in 1195 by Richard de Clare (Strongbow) then rebuilt in the 13th century by William Marshal, was the residence of the Butler family from 1391 until 1931. Its four circular towers, almost 30m high, are the first stones of a mystery that will take you back to 1366, the year of the Statutes of Kilkenny. Here, you decipher the beginnings of the tensions that would mark the history of Leinster.
Continue towards St Canice's Cathedral, an Anglican cathedral built between 1202 and 1285, seat of the Diocese of Ossory. Beside it stands St Canice's Round Tower, erected around 850-900 AD. This round tower, one of only five still standing in Ireland, rises 30m and, after 233 steps, offers a panorama of Kilkenny and the Medieval Mile. It is here, on the site of an ancient 6th-century monastery founded by St Canice, that you will discover the tomb of Bishop Ledrede (1324-1361), a key figure involved in the famous witchcraft trial of Alice Kyteler, linked to Anglo-Irish tensions.
Your journey then leads you to Black Abbey, a Dominican church founded in 1225 by William Marshal the Younger. This place, named 'Black' in reference to the black robes of the Dominicans, was rebuilt in the 14th century. It houses the tombs of the Grace family, closely linked to the Statutes of Kilkenny of 1366, which prohibited mixed marriages between Anglo-Irish. This site, at the heart of Leinster's heritage, reveals the social and cultural impact of these laws on the people of Kilkenny, an essential step in understanding the history of Kilkenny.
Heading towards The Tholsel on High Street, you discover this 1761 municipal building, which was once a toll-house and prison. Its neoclassical arcade and 19th-century clock make it an iconic monument. This place, once a site for medieval markets, is intrinsically linked to Kilkenny's post-Statutes of Kilkenny governance. Further on, Rothe House, a 16th-century dwelling (1594) belonging to the Protestant merchant Peter Rothe, offers a glimpse into Irish urban architecture before the strict enforcement of the Statutes, with its three houses and enclosed gardens, now a museum managed by the Rothe House and Garden Trust since 1963.
Your exploration culminates with John's Bridge, a 1770 bridge over the River Nore, replacing a medieval ford and connecting Parliament Street to the medieval center, and Sheep Gate, the only one of Kilkenny's eight medieval gates still standing, used to tax incoming sheep. These structures, at the heart of Ireland's Ancient East, offer a final perspective on Kilkenny, a city shaped by its history, trade, and laws. This walking tour of Kilkenny, part of the Medieval Mile Kilkenny and a National Monument Ireland, will have helped you decipher the remnants of an era, revealing how the city of Kilkenny evolved under the weight of the Statutes. You take with you the keys to understanding a Leinster heritage of unsuspected richness.
