The last Cathar refuge
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
On March 16, 1244, 220 Cathars walked into the flames rather than renounce their faith. The night before, four men escaped with a "treasure." The Holy Grail? A sacred manuscript? No one knows. The mystery of Montségur has never been solved.
The castle of Montségur stands at 1,207 meters altitude, atop a rocky peak called the Pog. It is the most sacred site of Catharism — and the most tragic. For ten months, some 400 Cathars resisted an army of 10,000 crusaders. When the siege ended, they chose death over abjuration. But the night before the pyre, four Parfaits escaped down the north face with a mysterious treasure.

« "They received the consolamentum, then they walked into the fire." »— — Chronicle of Guillaume de Puylaurens, on the pyre of Montségur, 1244
After the fall of Carcassonne in 1209, the Cathars retreated to mountain fortresses. Montségur, perched on a rocky peak at 1,207 meters altitude, became their spiritual capital. The castle housed the Cathar Church, its bishops, its Parfaits and Parfaites. It was the last bastion of a faith the Catholic Church wanted to annihilate.
In May 1243, the royal army and Inquisition troops laid siege. For ten months, the defenders held out in appalling conditions. When surrender was negotiated in March 1244, the Cathars secured a fifteen-day reprieve. On March 16, 220 men and women descended the Pog and climbed onto a vast pyre erected in the Prat dels Cremats — the Field of the Burned.
The night before the pyre, four Parfaits — Amiel Aicart, Hugo, Poitevin, and a fourth whose name has been lost — escaped down the north face of the Pog carrying what the chronicles call the "treasure of the Cathar Church." Was it gold? Sacred manuscripts? The Holy Grail, as the Nazis claimed when they excavated the site in 1944? The mystery remains unsolved.
