Peekskill's Hidden Witness — The 1949 Riot and Its Silenced Truth

🎭Your Mission

You are an investigative journalist, arriving in Peekskill in August 1949.

Paul Robeson, the legendary singer and activist, was scheduled to perform at Lakeland Picnic Grounds, but

« I am an artist, but I am an American Negro. The fight for freedom of my people is my fight. »
Paul Robeson, 1949

Peekskill, 1949: When Fear Struck Music

Paul Robeson, an iconic figure in African-American culture and a fervent civil rights advocate, was also known for his pro-Soviet sympathies during a period of intense Cold War tension. In 1949, two of his benefit concerts for the Civil Rights Congress, scheduled in Peekskill, New York, became the catalyst for an explosion of violence. On August 27, an anti-communist and anti-Black mob prevented the first concert from taking place, attacking attendees and burning effigies of Robeson.

On September 4, despite threats, a second concert was held at Hollow Brook Farm. Thousands of people, including veterans and union members, formed a security cordon around the attendees. However, at the end of the concert, as buses left the venue, organized rioters attacked them with stones, bottles, and bricks. The police were criticized for their inaction, and the Peekskill Riots marked a dark chapter in American civil rights history.

1 h 30 to 2 h 30 depending on your pace. The timer runs but only for the leaderboard — you play at your own tempo.

Q04What happens if I'm stuck?

You get 3 levels of hints per puzzle (increasing penalty). If truly stuck, you can skip the step (45-min penalty but you keep going).

Q05What's the age range?

From 12 without an adult, from 6 with an adult reading puzzles. Works for families, couples, friend groups, companies.

Q06What if my city isn't in the catalogue?

Pre-register or contact us — we'll email you as soon as your city is live.

Q07What is augmented reality exactly?

Point your phone at the façade: a historical character appears full-screen and speaks to you in your language.
