The Rio Grande Oath — Decipher the Lost Republic

🎭Your Mission

You are a secret emissary of the Republic of the Rio Grande, on a critical diplomatic mission in Laredo in January 1839.

You arrive at San Agustín Plaza, at the heart of

Follow the traces of the Republic of the Rio Grande, this ephemeral nation of 1839-1840 whose revolutionary capital was Laredo.

The story that haunts this land

Laredo was born in 1755 under the impetus of Colonel José de Escandon, who established this strategic colony on the north bank of the Rio Grande. San Agustín Plaza immediately became the political heart of this border town, witnessing public gatherings since the 18th century. Tomás Sánchez, first alcalde from 1778 to 1811, organized markets and civic events that forged Laredo's identity. When the 1839 revolution erupted, this historic plaza transformed into a revolutionary forum where independence speeches against Santa Anna resonated.

San Agustín Cathedral, built in 1770, became the spiritual sanctuary of the Republic of the Rio Grande. This original parish church, with its Spanish colonial architecture enriched with 19th-century neoclassical additions, sheltered the secret oaths of revolutionaries. Antonio Zapata, revolutionary priest born in 1740, celebrated patriotic masses there before joining the armed rebellion. The walls of this cathedral, one of Texas's oldest, still echo with prayers for independence whispered in 1839.

The Republic of the Rio Grande Museum occupies the former Webb County courthouse, built in 1882 on the foundations of the revolutionary government. This building actually housed the institutions of the ephemeral republic proclaimed on January 17, 1839, when Laredo became capital of a 294-day nation. The courtrooms preserve the echo of political debates from this little-known Texan revolution, led against Santa Anna's Mexican centralism. Each room tells a chapter of this aborted independence that preceded American annexation in 1845.

Casa Ortiz, built around 1840 by merchant Francisco Ortiz, perfectly illustrates the Mexican domestic architecture of the revolutionary era. This adobe house on Grant Street, in immediate proximity to San Agustín Plaza, preserves the atmosphere of 1839 conspirators. Francisco Ortiz, active in border trade, represents this merchant bourgeoisie that secretly financed the Republic of the Rio Grande. Its raw earth walls testify to the pre-annexation period, when Laredo hesitated between three flags: Mexico, Republic of Texas, and this ephemeral Rio Grande republic.

Your revolutionary emissary mission ends at Webb County Courthouse, architectural symbol of the border boom that followed the republican failure. Built in 1909-1912 in Beaux-Arts style, this courthouse has seen seven different flags pass: Spain, Mexico, Republic of Texas, Republic of the Rio Grande, United States. You carry away the memory of those 294 revolutionary days that nearly created an independent nation between Texas and Mexico. More than a lost republic: the dream of a unique border identity, that of Laredo as crossroads of three cultures.
