Beneath the ramparts of Luxembourg's Old Town, known as the Gibraltar of the North, lies a labyrinth of 17th-century casemates carved by Spanish engineers and expanded by Vauban's genius
You are an Austrian military engineer, tasked with an inspection mission within the Bock casemates of Luxembourg in 1781, under Emperor Joseph II.
You arrive at Montée de Clausen
Descend into the 23 kilometers of underground galleries that sheltered 35,000 people during World War II and discover the secrets of the fortifications that earned Luxembourg its nickname as the Gibraltar of the North.
Luxembourg was born in 963 on the Bock rock, when Count Sigefroi acquired this strategic promontory and built his castle there. This naturally fortified site dominates the Alzette valley and controls trade routes between France and the Germanic Empire. From the 12th century, the first underground passages pierced the rock to connect defense towers. You begin your investigation at Pont du Château, where the foundations of the original castle still plunge into the rocky substrate, before following the Chemin de la Corniche that hugs the contours of the ancient medieval walls.
In 1781, Emperor Joseph II launched construction of the modern Bock casemates, a 23-kilometer underground network carved into limestone rock. These galleries can accommodate 1,200 soldiers and 50 cannons, with a central well 47 meters deep for water supply. Austrian engineers designed a defensive labyrinth unique in Europe, connecting surface bastions to underground artillery positions. Near the Gëlle Fra statue, erected in 1923, you discover the entrance to the Pétrusse casemates, another 17th-century fortified system that complements the Bock's defensive apparatus.
Pont Adolphe, inaugurated in 1903, spans the Pétrusse valley at 42 meters height and testifies to Luxembourg's modernization after 1867. This year marked the end of German federal fortress status: fortifications were partially dismantled, but underground casemates survived. They found new civilian uses: mushroom farms in humid galleries, champagne cellars in dry sections, and even a beer concert hall called "Tun Deutsch" from 1932 to 1977. Place Clairefontaine preserves traces of these peaceful conversions, where the former powder magazine now houses shops.
During World War II, the casemates regained their protective purpose. More than 35,000 Luxembourg inhabitants took refuge there during Allied bombings, transforming military galleries into an underground city. The Grund district, below the Bock, suffered several air raids: its inhabitants climbed up to the casemates via stairs carved in rock since the Middle Ages. The Plateau du Saint-Esprit, former military glacis, became a gathering zone before descent to shelters. These underground spaces saved thousands of lives and definitively anchored the casemates in Luxembourg collective memory.
Since 1994, the Bock casemates are listed as UNESCO World Heritage as exceptional witnesses to European fortification art. Your route ends at the Town Hall, symbol of modern Luxembourg that has preserved its underground roots. You take away the vision of a city that transformed its war wounds into heritage treasures, its defensive galleries into living museums. These 17 kilometers of preserved casemates tell a thousand years of military ingenuity, from medieval picks to Austrian techniques, from war shelter to tourist site.

Absolutely. The puzzles aren't obvious — a curious teen will sweat just enough to be proud of cracking them. Progressive hints prevent frustration: if stuck, unlock hint level 1, then 2, then 3.
Three hint levels per puzzle, with a small increasing time penalty. If truly stuck after level 3, you can skip the step (45-min penalty). The point: nobody stays blocked and goes home frustrated.
