At the outset of the Civil War, Tennessee was the last state to join the Confederacy, but not without deep internal divisions. East Tennessee, with Knoxville at its heart, was fiercely loyal to the Union, sharply contrasting with the secessionist sentiments of the state's West and Middle. This polarization created a unique situation where families and neighbors often found themselves on opposing sides of the conflict, transforming daily life into an ideological and sometimes physical battlefield. Knoxville became a key strategic point, coveted and occupied in turn by Confederate and Union forces.

The period from 1861 to 1863 was particularly tumultuous for Knoxville. After a Confederate occupation, the city was liberated by Union troops in September 1863, under the command of Major General Ambrose Burnside. This occupation was closely followed by a Confederate siege led by General James Longstreet, culminating in the Battle of Fort Sanders. The determination of Knoxville Unionists, often organized into clandestine networks, played a crucial role in maintaining Union influence in the region, despite geographical isolation within a secessionist state.
