The Oath of Zamora — Honor, fratricide, and loyalty in the time of El Cid
« « Listen, Castilians, to what good Rodrigo says: if any of you know or hear that King Sancho sought or participated in his brother's death, I swear on this sword, he shall be my enemy. » »— The Song of Roland, adaptation of a passage related to the Oath of Santa Gadea (1072)
In 1065, upon the death of Ferdinand I of León, the kingdom was divided among his sons: Sancho II received Castile, Alfonso VI León, and García Galicia. His daughters, Urraca and Elvira, received the important cities of Zamora and Toro as appanages. Ambitious, Sancho II began to reunify the kingdom by force. After subduing his brothers, he laid siege to Zamora, held by his sister Urraca, who refused to yield. The heavily fortified city resisted heroically.
On October 7, 1072, as the siege dragged on, Sancho II was assassinated before the walls of Zamora by a Leonese nobleman, Bellido Dolfos, who allegedly acted on Urraca's orders. This brutal murder changed the course of history. Alfonso VI, exiled after his defeat against Sancho, was recalled to ascend the unified throne of León and Castile. However, the loyalty of the young Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, the future El Cid, to his former lord Sancho, led him to demand a public oath from Alfonso VI, at Santa Gadea de Burgos, to affirm his innocence in the regicide. This event marked the legend of El Cid and the complexity of medieval intrigues.

Yes — your code stays active and progress is saved. You can start Saturday afternoon, finish Sunday morning. Some players actually prefer this format to make the most of a full weekend on site.
Great two-person format. Narration is dramatic without overdoing it, puzzles are designed to spark conversation. Ideal for new relationships or anniversaries — you discover the city and coordinate on puzzles simultaneously.
Intermittent 4G is plenty. Maps are cached at startup. Narration and clues load per stop, so a so-so signal between stops is fine. GPS itself uses no data.
