Prince Naresuan, born in Phitsanulok in 1555, was a central figure in Thai history. Raised as a hostage in Pegu, the Burmese capital, he returned to Ayutthaya driven by a fierce will to liberate his kingdom. His rigorous military training and strategic intelligence developed in his hometown, which was a crucial outpost of the kingdom.
The declaration of independence in 1584 marked the beginning of a series of military campaigns. His most famous feat of arms is the elephant duel (Yuddhahatthi) in 1593 against the Burmese Crown Prince Mingyi Swa. This symbolic and decisive victory consolidated Siam's sovereignty and made Naresuan a legendary figure, revered for his courage and determination.
