The Sanctuary of Korean Resistance
Gyeongseong Prison, later renamed Seodaemun Prison, was built in 1908 by Japanese imperialists to imprison and break the spirit of Korean patriots. This place of suffering paradoxically became a crucible of resistance, where iconic figures such as Yu Gwan-sun, heroine of the March 1st Movement, and Kim Ku, future leader of the provisional government, were held. Conditions were inhumane, and the tortures inflicted on dissidents aimed to extinguish any flame of freedom.
After the liberation in 1945, Seodaemun's dark history did not end. The prison continued to be used by authoritarian post-Korean War regimes to incarcerate political opponents until 1987.
