The story that haunts this land
Your journey in Gyeongju begins at the Cheomseongdae Observatory, National Treasure No. 31 of South Korea. Built in 647 during the reign of Queen Seondeok of Silla, this 9.17 m high stone astronomical observatory is one of the oldest preserved in East Asia. Its 365 stones represent the days of the year, and its 12-stone base symbolizes the months. Here, the stars whispered the secrets of royal destiny, and it is within its walls that the first clues of your quest appear, guiding you to the roots of the Silla lineage.
Continue your investigation in the Gyerim Forest (계림), a legendary 7-hectare site, planted with ancient trees and a place of Shinto rituals. It is here, around 69 AD, that legend places the birth of King Kim Alji, mythical founder of the Silla royal lineage. Mentioned in the Samguk Sagi (1145) as the birthplace of the founding king, this area is classified as National Treasure No. 33 and houses a commemorative stele from 1964. Do the ancient trees of Gyerim conceal traces of the first plots against the monarchy, or are they the silent guardians of a sacred heritage?
