The Salt Princess: Saint Kinga's Legacy
Born in 1234, Kinga of Hungary, daughter of King Béla IV, was betrothed at the age of five to the Polish Duke Bolesław V the Chaste. Far from being a mere political marriage, their union was marked by profound piety and a mutual vow of chastity. Kinga brought with her not only a considerable dowry but also an invaluable gift: the introduction of advanced mining techniques from Hungary, which enabled the systematic exploitation of the salt deposits in Wieliczka and Bochnia, transforming these places into economic pillars of the Kingdom of Poland.
Legend has it that Kinga, before leaving Hungary, cast her engagement ring into a salt mine in Máramaros. Years later, while visiting Wieliczka, she instructed miners to dig at a specific spot. To their astonishment, they found a large block of salt, and inside it, Kinga's ring. This miracle was interpreted as a divine sign, and Kinga was revered as the patroness of salt miners. After her husband's death in 1279, she entered the Poor Clares monastery in Stary Sącz, which she had founded, dying there in 1290. Her canonization in 1999 by John Paul II sealed her status as an iconic figure in Poland.
