The CSS Virginia—once the captured USS Merrimack—terror
Norfolk 1862: The Merrimack's Rebirth
« “It was a huge affair, looking like the roof of a barn sunk in the water, with a smokestack projecting from the middle of it.” »— Union eyewitness, 1862
In April 1861, as Virginia joined the Confederacy, Union forces attempted to destroy the Gosport Navy Yard (now Norfolk Naval Shipyard) to prevent its capture. Among the ships burned and scuttled was the steam frigate USS Merrimack. Confederate Secretary of the Navy, Stephen Mallory, saw an unexpected opportunity: to salvage the wreck and transform it into an ironclad, capable of breaking the Union blockade. This daring project, launched with urgency, mobilized engineers and workers in Norfolk.
For months, in utmost secrecy, the Merrimack was refloated and converted. Its superstructure was replaced by a sloped armored casemate, covered with iron plates. Renamed CSS Virginia, it became a symbol of Confederate ingenuity in the face of adversity. On March 8, 1862, it made its first sortie into Hampton Roads, spreading terror among the Union's wooden ships. The next day, it confronted the USS Monitor, the Union's first ironclad, in a battle that forever changed the face of naval warfare.
