In the shadowed hills of Lacoste, the Château de Lacoste looms as a monument to infamy
You are an agent of the French Crown, dispatched to Lacoste in 1777, with a clandestine mission in the Luberon.
Your task is to monitor Donatien Alphonse
Follow the scandalous traces of the Marquis de Sade in his Lacoste castle, theater of his scandals and refuge of his escapes between 1769 and 1778.
Lacoste has raised its golden stones since the 11th century, when the first lords erected their fortress on this rocky spur of the Luberon. The castle, remodeled multiple times over the centuries, became the property of the Sade family in the 16th century. Donatien Alphonse François, future Marquis de Sade, was born there in 1740 and transformed this family residence into a theater of his sulfurous passions. Saint-Trophime Church, starting point of your investigation, has watched over this perched village since the Middle Ages, silent witness to the scandals that would shake Provençal nobility.
Between 1769 and 1772, the Marquis de Sade made Lacoste his libertine laboratory. He resided there with his family, organized scandalous parties, and in 1772 built a theater for 120 spectators in his castle courtyard. Rue Haute and Rue Basse echoed with the comings and goings of his guests, actors, and mistresses. His excesses provoked indignation: in 1772, the Rose Keller affair then the Marseille scandal forced him to flee. But Lacoste remained his refuge, where he returned to hide after each escape.
Imprisoned in Vincennes then the Bastille, Sade escaped and returned to his Lacoste castle in 1777-1778. These months of clandestine freedom marked the peak of his creative life: he wrote, staged plays in his private theater, received courtesans. The Porte de la Garde and medieval ramparts protected his secrets from prying eyes. The village's communal oven, vestige of community life, contrasted with the radical individualism of the libertine lord who defied all conventions of his era.
The French Revolution of 1792 abruptly shattered this dissolute existence. Lacoste castle was pillaged and partially destroyed by revolutionaries who saw Sade as the incarnation of the hated Ancien Régime. Paradoxically, the libertine writer survived the Terror by making himself forgotten, while his ancestral home fell to ruins. The fountain on Place de l'Église continues to flow, sole permanent witness to that bygone era when a man dared push freedom to its most extreme limits.
From Lacoste's belvedere, the view embraces the entire Luberon valley once dominated by the Marquis de Sade. In 2001, Pierre Cardin bought the castle ruins and undertook its restoration, organizing opera festivals and theatrical performances in the quarries and historic courtyard. You leave this investigation convinced that Lacoste preserves the soul of its most famous owner: a spirit of transgression and creation that crosses centuries, from 18th-century scandals to the contemporary avant-garde that Pierre Cardin programs there each summer.
