Amoskeag Millyard — The Secret of the Filatures

🎭Your Mission

You are a private investigator, specializing in historical cold cases, summoned to Manchester, USA in 1950 to finally expose the truth behind the Amoskeag Millyard's

Manchester: The epic of the mills that shaped a city and its destinies

« Within these walls, every thread tells a story, every machine a labor. We didn't speak, we worked. »
Testimony of an Amoskeag mill worker, circa 1930

The Era of Cotton Giants

In the early 19th century, the vision of harnessing the power of the Amoskeag Falls on the Merrimack River gave birth to an unprecedented industrial project. In 1831, the Amoskeag Manufacturing Company was founded, radically transforming a small agricultural community into a bustling manufacturing city. Inspired by the 'Lowell System,' the mills initially employed 'mill girls,' young women from New England farms, before successive waves of immigration, particularly Irish, French-Canadian, and Greek, significantly diversified and increased its workforce. The mills became one of the largest textile complexes in the world, producing thousands of miles of fabric daily.

For nearly a century, the red bricks of Amoskeag symbolized American industrial might. However, the 1920s marked the beginning of decline, with increasing Southern competition, major strikes, and the stock market crash of 1929. In 1935, the gates of the Amoskeag Mills closed for the last time, leaving behind a complex legacy of economic progress and social struggles. Today, the majestic buildings of the Millyard have been repurposed, housing universities, businesses, and museums, but the echo of their industrial past still resonates in the streets of Manchester.
