France's most mysterious priest
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
In 1891, a poor village priest suddenly became fabulously rich. Bérenger Saunière rebuilt his church with bizarre coded symbols, constructed a medieval tower and a luxurious villa. Where did the money come from? The mystery of Rennes-le-Château has fascinated the world for over a century.
Father Bérenger Saunière arrived in Rennes-le-Château in 1885, in a village of 200 souls perched on a hill in the Aude. The church was crumbling. Six years later, he began colossal renovations, brought in artisans from across France, and filled the church with strange symbols. A devil supports the holy water font. The Stations of the Cross contain deliberate anomalies. Who gave him the money? The Visigoths? The Templars? Mary Magdalene herself?

« "Terribilis est locus iste." — This place is terrible. »— — Inscription above the church door, placed by Saunière
In 1885, Bérenger Saunière, age 33, was appointed parish priest of Rennes-le-Château, an isolated village in the Corbières. The stipend was meager, the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene was crumbling. But in 1891, during renovation work, Saunière discovered documents hidden in a Visigothic pillar of the altar. He traveled to Paris, met mysterious figures, and returned transformed.
From 1896, he spent lavishly: a complete restoration of the church with a disturbing symbolic decor, construction of the Tour Magdala (a medieval library facing the Pyrenees), the Villa Bethania (a luxurious residence), an exotic garden and orangery. The symbols he had carved into the stone defy classical interpretation: the devil Asmodeus, a reversed black and white checkerboard, deliberately erroneous Stations of the Cross.
Saunière died in 1917, taking his secret to the grave. His servant Marie Dénarnaud, sole heir, lived until 1953 without ever speaking. Theories abound: Visigothic treasure, Templar gold, a dynastic secret of Mary Magdalene, trafficking in masses. Gérard de Sède's book "L'Or de Rennes," published in 1967, launched one of the greatest treasure hunts in French history.
