The Mystery of the Sacred Cave
Actun Tunichil Muknal, or ATM Cave, is much more than a simple natural cavity: it is an archaeological site of paramount importance that bears witness to Maya ritual practices of the Late Classic period (600-900 AD). The Maya considered caves as entrances to Xibalba, the underworld, a sacred place where they communicated with gods and ancestors. Complex ceremonies were organized there, involving offerings of pottery, jade, and, in extreme cases, human sacrifices to appease deities or request rain during times of drought.
The most poignant discovery within ATM Cave is that of the « Crystal Maiden », an adolescent skeleton completely calcified, whose silhouette sparkles. She is among the fourteen skeletons found in the cave, most of which are children or young adults. These bodies, along with over 1400 ceramic and stone artifacts, have remained intact for over a millennium, offering a unique window into the spirituality and beliefs of a fascinating civilization, whose secrets are still partially buried beneath the Belizean jungle.
