Homestead 1892 — Unravel the threads of a bloody strike
« “The blood of workingmen is not less precious than the capital of billionaires.” »— Emma Goldman, anarchist and activist, 1892
The Homestead Strike of 1892 was a major industrial dispute between steelworkers and the Carnegie Steel Company. Henry Clay Frick, the company's chairman in Andrew Carnegie's absence, aimed to break the powerful Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers union. In response to failed negotiations and a lockout of the plant, workers mobilized to prevent strikebreakers from entering. The escalation of violence reached its peak on July 6, 1892, when Frick called in 300 agents from the Pinkerton National Detective Agency to take control of the mill via the Monongahela River.
The Pinkerton landing was violently repelled by armed workers, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries on both sides. After a day-long siege, the Pinkerton agents surrendered, but the workers' victory was short-lived. The Governor of Pennsylvania deployed the National Guard, which occupied Homestead for months, allowing the plant to resume operations with non-union labor. The strike ended in November 1892 with the union's defeat, symbolizing a major setback for the American labor movement against the power of large corporations.
