Bonifacio — Aragon Staircase Siege Secret

🎭Your Mission

You are a Genoese intelligence agent, undercover in Bonifacio under siege by Alfonso V of Aragon in 1420.

Your mission: discover who among the defenders is preparing to betray the

Uncover the secrets of Corsica's most daring siege: 189 steps carved into the cliff, a stubborn King of Aragon, and Bonifacio's heroic resistance in 1420.

The story that haunts this land

Bonifacio awakens under your steps at the Porta di Genova, built in the 13th century by the masters of the maritime Republic. This main entrance to the citadel saw the passage of Alfonso V of Aragon's soldiers in September 1420, when the king undertook the conquest of Corsica to extend his Mediterranean empire. Behind these ancient stones, the Bonifacians prepared to resist for five months one of the most fierce sieges in their history. Your investigation begins here, where Aragonese spies attempted to corrupt Genoese sentries.

The Bastion de l'Étendard reveals its military secrets in the 14th-century underground chambers. This Genoese fortification served as headquarters for the defenders during the 1420 siege, sheltering meetings between loyalists and the presumed conspirators you're tracking. The thick walls heard resistance plans when Aragonese bombardments rained on the citadel. Here alliances were forged and perhaps the betrayals that could have delivered Bonifacio to the enemy were plotted.

The church of Sainte-Marie-Majeure, erected between 1270 and 1320, becomes the theater of your gravest suspicions. In this Genoese-style nave, less than 500 meters from the Porta di Genova, inhabitants secretly gathered during the siege. The vaults echoed with prayers for deliverance, but also with suspicious whispers from those secretly negotiating with the besiegers. Each pillar perhaps hides a cache, each confession an admission of treason.

The King of Aragon Staircase reveals its most troubling mystery: its 189 steps carved into the limestone cliff led to the Saint-Barthélemy spring, vital stake of the siege. Contrary to the legend claiming Alfonso V's soldiers dug it in one night, this access existed well before 1420. Did the Aragonese know this secret passage thanks to a Bonifacian traitor? The 65-meter descent at 45° slope plunges you into the heart of the enigma: how did the enemy discover this freshwater supply route?

Bonifacio's port closes your investigation where the Aragonese fleet anchored its 130 ships in 1420. From these waters departed the maritime assaults against the citadel, and here in 1421 appeared the Genoese relief fleet that definitively broke the siege. Your investigation reveals the Corsican soul: fierce resistance where even women and children defended their ramparts. You leave with the certainty that Bonifacio never yielded, and that its war secrets still sleep in the citadel's stones.
