November 1758. Fort Duquesne
1758: Thwart the last French ruse before the fall of Fort Duquesne
« The French have taken possession of this country and fortified the most important place in the vicinity. »— George Washington, 1754
In the mid-18th century, the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers, forming the Ohio, became a crucial strategic point for control of the vast territories of the American West. The French, keen to extend their influence from Canada, erected Fort Duquesne there in 1754. This fortification marked the beginning of the Seven Years' War in North America, known as the French and Indian War. Figures like George Washington, then a young British officer, distinguished themselves in early skirmishes, notably the Battle of Fort Necessity.
After several years of conflict and unsuccessful attempts by the British, including General Braddock's defeat in 1755, Fort Duquesne was finally abandoned and burned by the French in November 1758 in the face of General John Forbes' advancing troops. The British, taking possession of the site, built Fort Pitt there, in honor of William Pitt the Elder. The city of Pittsburgh would be born around this new fort, its very name a tribute to this strategic victory and the ingenuity of military engineer John Stanwix.
