May 1846
May 1846. General Zachary Taylor's army stands poised on the Rio Grande, tensions with Mexico at a breaking point. A young scout carrying Taylor's encrypted battle orders vanishes during a night patrol near Fort Brown. Before capture, he managed to conceal eight coded messages across the fort's bastions, barracks, and earthworks—each one a fragment of a master strategy that could have prevented bloodshed or guaranteed victory at Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma. Your mission: infiltrate the historic fort grounds, locate each hidden dispatch, crack the military cipher, and reconstruct Taylor's secret plan. What was the general truly plotting? Was it a defensive gambit to hold the line, or an offensive strike into Mexican territory? The answers lie buried in the fort's six-sided star fortification, where history's turning points were written in code. Time is running out. Mexican forces are massing across the river. Decode the messages, expose Taylor's strategy, and change the course of the war—or let history repeat itself.
« Our flag has been planted on the west bank of the Rio Grande. It is a portion of the territory of the United States. We have been attacked on our own territory. »— Président James K. Polk, message au Congrès, 11 mai 1846
The Mexican-American War, from 1846 to 1848, was a major conflict for the North American continent, rooted in the annexation of Texas by the United States in 1845. Mexico, which had never recognized Texas's independence, still considered the region its own. The dispute intensified over the border demarcation: the United States claimed the Rio Grande, while Mexico insisted on the Nueces River, further north. This contested zone became a powder keg, ready to explode.
The breaking point came in April 1846. General Zachary Taylor, on orders from President James K. Polk, moved his troops to the Rio Grande, building Fort Texas (future Fort Brown) across from Matamoros. An American patrol was attacked by Mexican forces north of the river, an event that served as a casus belli. War was declared, and Brownsville, with its Battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma, became the epicenter of the initial confrontations.
