The ruins of the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Limpia Concepción del Rescate de Ujarrás, built around 1575, are the oldest in Costa Rica. They bear witness to Spanish colonization and evangelization. But before the arrival of the Conquistadors, the valley was inhabited by the Huetar, an indigenous people whose traditions and deep connection to nature left lasting imprints, often intertwined with Christian narratives.
The central legend of Ujarrás tells that a Huetar fisherman found a small wooden box floating on the Reventazón River, containing an image of the Virgin Mary. This 'Virgen del Rescate' became the object of intense devotion, culminating during the great flood of 1639.
