In the 14th century, Veliky Novgorod was ruled not by a single tyrant, but by the veche — a radical medieval assembly where merchants, craftsmen, and nobles gathered to decide the city's fate
You are a loyalist of the veche, in Veliky Novgorod, on the eve of its conquest by Ivan III in 1478.
For centuries, Veliky Novgorod thrived under
« May the freedom of Novgorod be eternal, and may the Veche bell ring forever for truth. »— Novgorod Chronicle, 14th century
Founded in the 9th century, Novgorod became one of the most powerful cities of Kievan Rus', then the capital of a vast medieval republic. Its political system, the Veche, was unique: a popular assembly where free citizens voted on laws, elected princes and posadniks (mayors), and decided on war and peace. The city prospered thanks to its central role in Hanseatic trade, connecting Western Europe to the rich lands of the East via the Fur Road. Its spiritual independence, centered around St. Sophia Cathedral, and its ability to repel Swedish and Teutonic invaders, cemented its status as 'Lord Great Novgorod'.
However, this independence was seen as a threat by the rising power of the Grand Principality of Moscow. After decades of tensions and conflicts, the fatal blow was delivered by Ivan IV the Terrible. In 1471, Novgorod's defeat at the Battle of Shelon significantly weakened the republic. In 1478, Ivan annexed Novgorod, deported its elites, abolished the Veche, and took the legendary Veche bell to Moscow, marking the end of this unique democratic experiment and the beginning of a centralized era for Russia.
