The Enigma of the Temple Builders
The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum was accidentally discovered in 1902 when workers were tasked with digging a well for a new housing development. They stumbled upon a series of underground caverns, revealing a monumental complex that was first explored by Father Manuel Magri, and then systematically excavated by Dr. Themistocles Zammit. This site, entirely hand-carved, served as a necropolis and sanctuary, bearing witness to the ingenuity and beliefs of a culture that dominated Malta for millennia.
Dating from approximately 3600 to 2500 BC, the Hypogeum is an architectural and spiritual marvel. Its three underground levels feature halls and chambers carved with astonishing precision, some imitating the megalithic structures of surface temples. The 'Oracle Room', with its unique acoustic properties, and the 'Main Chamber', adorned with spiral motifs and ochre wall paintings, are striking examples.
