Tharros: A Mediterranean Crossroads of Antiquity
Tharros, on the picturesque Sinis Peninsula, is a living testament to Mediterranean civilizations. Founded by the Nuragic people, it became a prosperous Phoenician trading post around the 8th century BC, before coming under Carthaginian influence, and then being conquered by the Romans in the 3rd century BC. Its strategic position in the heart of the Gulf of Oristano made it a major commercial and cultural crossroads, exchanging pottery, precious metals, and ideas across the ancient Mediterranean.
Tharros's decline began with the Arab raids of the 9th century AD, eventually forcing its inhabitants to abandon it in the 11th century to found Oristano. Its ruins, swallowed by time and sand, have become an inexhaustible source for archaeologists, but also, unfortunately, for looters seeking to seize its heritage. The story of Tharros is that of a city resurrected by excavations, but constantly threatened by greed.
