Orgosolo — Decode the Walls of Resistance

Orgosolo, nestled in the heart of the Sardinian Barbagia, is an emblematic name associated with resistance and banditry. Historically, the region has always been a land of protest against central authority, where the 'codice barbaricino' – an ancestral code of honor – often took precedence over state law. This context gave rise to mythical bandit figures, such as Giovanni Corbeddu Salis in the 19th century or Graziano Mesina in the 20th, often perceived as 'outlaws' fighting against social injustice and the spoliation of pastoral lands. Their history is part of a tradition of revolt against established powers.

It is in this fertile ground that Orgosolo's famous murals were born. The movement began in 1969 with an anarchist group, then was systematized by Professor Francesco Del Casino and his students starting in 1975. These frescoes, painted on house facades, denounce social injustices, imperialism, war, and capitalism, while celebrating Sardinian culture and class struggle. They have become a powerful means of political and artistic expression, a 'mural newspaper' that documents the history and aspirations of a proud and rebellious people, sometimes concealing deeper messages than simple observation reveals.
