Khun Sa: The Opium Lord and the American Hunt
Chang Chi-fu, better known as Khun Sa, emerged as a dominant figure in the Golden Triangle in the 1960s. Leader of the Shan United Army (SUA) and later the Mong Tai Army (MTA), he controlled a vast drug empire, exploiting the chaos of civil wars in Burma (now Myanmar) and regional rivalries. His power was such that he sometimes leveraged his influence with various factions, including elements of the Thai army, and was even initially tolerated by some Western actors as part of the anti-communist struggle, before becoming public enemy number one.
The international pursuit intensified in 1989 when the United States indicted him for drug trafficking, offering a $2 million reward for his capture. This increasing pressure, coupled with internal conflicts and an offensive by the Burmese army, forced Khun Sa to surrender in January 1996. He surrendered to Burmese authorities, ending his reign in the Golden Triangle. Despite the US indictment, he was never extradited and lived under protection in Yangon until his death in 2007, leaving behind a complex history of tribal resilience, illicit power, and cynical geopolitics.
