Your journey begins at the Maloja Pass, the starting point for your exploration of the forgotten ledger. This alpine pass, located at an altitude of 1815 m, has been a vital link between Engadine and Val Bregaglia since antiquity, notably thanks to the via Spluga. It is here, at this strategic point for transalpine trade, that Roman documents mention 'Summo Maelojam' around 50 AD. The paved road you stand on, built by Carlo Donegani between 1824 and 1825, replaced the old mule track, thus modernizing this historic passage. This place is a gateway to the history of Maloja.
