Goldfield — The Forgotten Ledger

Goldfield was born in 1902 from the discovery of a gold vein by Harry Stimler and William Marsh, transforming a Nevada desert into an eldorado. George Wingfield, who arrived as a bookmaker in 1901, partnered with George Nixon to found the Goldfield Consolidated Mines Company in 1906, which extracted over 11 million dollars in gold until 1910. This mining company made Wingfield the king of Goldfield, then Nevada's richest man, controlling banks and politics all the way to Reno.

The Esmeralda County Courthouse, built in 1905 in red brick over three floors, testifies to this lightning prosperity at 100 Main Street. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, this courthouse administered a population that reached 20,000 inhabitants in 1907, making Goldfield Nevada's largest city ahead of Reno and Las Vegas. Its courtrooms saw the trials of claim jumpers and mining disputes that stirred the Far West.

The Goldfield Hotel, opened in 1908 for $200,000 by Wingfield and promoter Tex Rickard, was the most luxurious hotel in the American West with its 154 rooms, hydraulic elevators and five floors dominating Main Street. Closed since 1945, this NRHP-listed monument still allegedly haunts the streets according to residents, its gaping windows watching over the decline of the city that then had fewer than 400 souls.

The 1907 Goldfield High School on Crook Avenue and the 1905 Miners Union Hall, the largest union hall in the West with its 400 seats, tell the social organization of a boomtown that wanted to be eternal. These stone and brick buildings, all listed as historic heritage in 1982, housed the dreams of a generation that believed gold inexhaustible, before the veins were exhausted around 1912 and the exodus began.

Today, Goldfield has fewer than 300 inhabitants compared to 20,000 at its 1907 peak, but its mining remains around Columbus Street and preserved historic buildings offer an authentic journey into Nevada's golden age.
